I’ve followed BIGBANG since the very beginning, through the music and the variety show appearances that let fans see who they were off stage. “Always,” “Lies,” “Dirty Cash,” and “Wonderful” have stayed on constant rotation for me, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg with their catalogue of outstanding music. Watching them mark two decades on the 한강 (Han-gang) felt like a blessing, for 브이아이피 (V.I.P.) and K-pop fans everywhere.

On August 19, 2026, the Han River became BIGBANG’s stage. Thousands of V.I.P.s gathered at the Water Light Stage in 여의도 (Yeouido) Hangang Park for “BIGBANG 20th Anniversary × Hangang Collaboration,” a free, one-night celebration with Coupang Play marking two decades since the group’s 2006 debut — part thank-you to fans, part warm-up for the world tour two days away.

An evening built around “BIGBANG UNIVERSE”

A DJ set reimagined the group’s biggest hits in fresh arrangements, paired with a career-spanning visual retrospective and a media-art installation built around the “BIGBANG UNIVERSE” concept. Then, as darkness fell, a massive drone formation lit up the sky over the river, tracing the group’s symbols and history, before fireworks closed out the night.

Seoul leaned in too, temporarily closing Mulbit Square for the crowds, while Coupang Play livestreamed the event for fans who missed out on the free, first-come-first-served tickets.

The real surprise: “BiiiG”

Hours before the celebration, at 6 p.m. KST, BIGBANG released 신곡 (singok) “BiiiG,” their first new song in over four years, since 2022’s “Still Life.” YG Entertainment described it as a high-energy hip-hop track built around a heavy beat and an infectious hook, with G-Dragon involved in both lyrics and composition. Releasing it the same day turned the Han River gathering into more than nostalgia — fans got to celebrate the past while hearing what the group sounds like now.

A prelude, not a finale

Two days later, on August 21, BIGBANG kicked off their “XX: COSMOS” world tour with three homecoming shows at Goyang Sports Complex, the first stop on 33 concerts across 19 cities. The tour follows their high-profile Coachella reunion earlier in 2026, itself years in the making after their original 2020 appearance was scrapped.

The bigger picture

Twenty years is a long time in any industry, and an eternity in K-pop. That BIGBANG could still fill a riverside park, trend a livestream, and drop a new single fans immediately embraced says as much about their staying power as any drone formation in the sky.
